Trooping: Puppetry Arts Theatre Halloween Carnival

My second Brooklyn troop – the first being the Brooklyn Cyclones game at Coney Island, which got rained out… This was another rainy day, but thankfully, the gymnasium hosting the event had a roof. (I’m still bummed that Skutch didn’t get to throw out the first pitch in his TC…it would have been awesome.)

Fairly small event – three stormtroopers, two bounty hunters, two rebel scum, and Darth Vader deigned to grace us with his presence after he got off work. (It’s always confusing when I have to explain to people where Darth Vader is: “Umm…he’s at work…on his Star Destroyer…”)

The event might have been more fun if we had had more opportunity to interact with participants…make paper bag puppets together with kids or something…but the crew running the event wouldn’t let us do anything but walk in circles without buying tickets… I’m not gonna pay to do volunteer work. However, Mike did buy some tickets…Ray and I used them cotton candy.

Darth Vader was asked to help judge the kids’ costume context…which is kinda funny, as Darth Vader can’t really see in that helmet… But there was only one costume that really mattered to us geeks: the toddler in the purple Joker suit, green hair, face paint, the whole nine yards… Who thinks to dress up their toddler as a psychopathic killer? Brilliant.

The other big thing, Ray insisted, was getting pictures with McDonald’s Grimace. I have to admit…that photo’s a keeper: Darth Vader, Grimace, and a stormtrooper…classic.

I and my troupe are performing at a convention (painfully) soon and was wondering if I could use the storm trooper holding the cotton candy image in our flier. It’ll be among a few we consider, but I figured it would be best to ask well in advance instead of choosing one, then asking, and finding out no, then asking another person, and… well, you get the idea XD It’s entirely for zero profit, and just silly laughs. Thanks!

On behalf of Puppetry Arts i have to say that we LOVE LOVE the 501st etc coming to all of our events-

Your post is not just hurtful to us- its truthfully incorrect.

You could have done anything you wanted at the event and we told the reps from your organizations that you could have snacked on or taken part in anything you wanted.

I’m the guy in charge of the event- and i know for a fact- You never asked.

I take great offense to your “im not gonna pay to volunteer comment”
It makes our charity sound very bad. And that is simply not the case.

I want to clear this up-
You’re in a costume at a halloween party- the teenage high school volunteers working the booths would not know you from snoopy.
So of course they would have asked for a ticket-

But again- you NEVER NEVER asked ME for anything. So it is your fault and I am upset over the fact that you place blame on us.

I gave another stormtrooper over 20 tickets to go around town with at that very same event.

We do hope that your orgs come back again as we love to have you, but i certainly hope that when you do, that you understand when you need something you have to ask for it. Its very clear that Im the guy in charge bc i always introduce myself. You want to do a craft? Say so. You want a jelly bean? Say so… Im not a jedi for the force’s sake.

I’m very sorry that my experience offended you. This was a year and a half ago, so it is very hard for me to remember the details. Perhaps there should have been more communication between our groups before the event so we all had clear expectations.

This wasn’t a put forth as a negative post – just a simple report. I had been happy to be there, in my own neighborhood, making people smile.
